Facebook has partnered with Luxottica, the maker of Ray-Ban to launch smart glasses in 2021. The company is pumping money into Project Aria, via its Facebook Reality Labs to come up with a pair of consumer AR glasses.

The company admits that a true AR product might not still be a reality, but its medium term plans are much more modest. As, Facebook has ruled out the use of AR or any kind of display on the Ray Ban partnership, we may be looking at a Snap Spectacles style device, ideally with cameras. Apart from Facebook, other tech giants are also lining up to take a run at AR. Google has bought North, one of the few companies to make some headway with a consumer AR product.

We have heard constant rumours that Apple has been aiming for Apple AR specs – which has been evident via personnel hires. However, the consumer AR dream of a seamlessly connected virtual and real world experience is just that, a dream!
